Day 1 (May 12): Introduction to the Internet

 

  1. Internet vs. the World Wide Web: What's the difference?
  2. History of the Web
  3. Structure and Organization of Cyberspace
  4. How search engines work
  5. Developing search strategies

 

 

Day 2 (May 14): Search Engines

 

  1. Comparing the big ones: Google, Yahoo, Ask
  2. Using advanced features
  3. Online databases

 

Day 3 (May 19): Evaluating Web Sites

 

  1. Criteria: Authority, Accuracy, Objectivity, Currency, Coverage
  2. Finding specialized information on the Web
  3. Citing Web sources using APA style

 

Day 4 (May 21): The Web and Society

 

  1. Wikipedia and academia
  2. Open encyclopedias
  3. Web 2.0

 

Final Project 

 

 

The final project ("Webliography") is due on Wednesday, May 21st. Papers must be submitted by email to fbrasile@pierce.ctc.edu or in person at the Puyallup campus library.
